Why You Should Be Drinking More Fruit Juice Daily
There’s no denying the major benefits of drinking freshly squeezed fruit juice on a regular basis, between the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants each type contains. One of the best remedies for urinary tract infections actually comes in the form of drinking fruit juice – portraying just one of the many ways it is a powerful substance. Although women are more prone to urinary tract infections – one out of two women have a lifetime risk – men can also experience the unfortunate condition. So, aside from visiting a urologist, the number one question men (and women) have when they get a urinary tract infection is: Will fruit juice really help fight against it?
What is a Urinary Tract Infection?
Urinary tract infections are caused by bacteria that comes from the large intestine. When the bacteria escape the anus, it is in the ideal position to enter the urethra – the tube that brings urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. When it enters the urethra, the bacteria then have the ability to travel up to the bladder, where it can potentially infect the kidneys if it goes untreated. Urinary tract infections cause burning sensations while urinating, an intense urge to urinate, pain in the back of the lower abdomen, cloudy urine and a fever. Although women are more likely to get urinary tract infections because they have shorter urethras than men, having sex is another way that men can fall susceptible to the condition as well.
Fruit Juice as Urinary Tract Infection Treatment: The Science Behind It
In addition to the other appropriate treatment methods a urologist gives to patients, drinking certain types of juice are almost always on the list. Juices work entirely different than antibiotics, although they achieve the same goal in the end. Instead of killing off the bacteria, juice actually makes the bacteria less sticky, which does not allow it to attach to the bladder’s walls. While warding off pesky urinary tract infections is one of the main goals of drinking juice, it also has the ability to prevent urinary tract infections before they can even occur. Patients who have urinary tract infections should definitely incorporate fresh fruit juice into their daily diets, but also take a low dose of prescribed antibiotics, either after sex or one to two days each time the symptoms appear.
Types of Fruit Juice to Drink When You Have a Urinary Tract Infection
All types of fruit juice help to build a stronger immune system, and have a wide range of nutritional value with each piece that is consumed. There are three fruits in particular, though, that are recommended for both men and women to drink if they have a urinary tract infection, or if they feel one coming on. Cranberry, apple and bananas can also be blended together and combined to create the ultimate, drinkable remedy for those suffering from urinary tract infections. Cranberries, specifically, have quininic acid, which helps lift toxins from the kidneys, bladder, testicles and prostate. You can always add more sweetened fruit juice, like pineapples, to the cranberry, apple and banana juice blend to even out the taste.
